...a few weeks ago, we got around to purchasing some birdseed to refill the feeder that had been sitting around, empty. we filled it up, and hung it on a low branch of the crape myrtle tree that's right next to our lower deck. this seemed like a good place since we spend lots of time out there, and it's also easy to see from our family room doors that open onto the deck - a place we often spend time playing and reading. after hanging the feeder, ben started trying to summon the birds by calling "birds! eat food! eat, eat, eat!" (over and over and over again)
of course the birds did come, and they haven't stopped coming since. we have a pair of cardinals, a blue jay, and many others which i haven't yet identified (but will, as soon as i remember to bring home a field guide to birds from my library). we all love watching them, and decided to put another feeder up, in an effort to keep our feathered friends happy.

we've also been checking out bird books the last few trips to the library (along with shark books, but that's a whole different story). a few of our recent favorite reads about birds:
Birds, nests & eggs - Mel Boring
About birds: A guide for children - Cathryn Sill
Owl babies - Martin Waddell
Blue sky bluebird - Rick Chrustowski
