nature shelf, spring-style...

...so the shelf i cleared off for the bits and pieces of nature we find has started to fill. i had two ideas of what to put on it as a start - some sunflowers, which we found at whole foods, in anticipation of the seeds we'll be planting in ben's garden, and a terrarium. i didn't have much of an idea of how to construct a terrarium, but did a search and figured out the basic components - gravel on the bottom, dirt in the middle, and grasses, moss and other bits on the top. i used a large jar, and had ben help gather up some of these things from around yard.

we also found a little frog (or toad - i'm not sure which one), and put him in it. we kept him in there just for the better part of a day, and then let him go. we may put some woolly worms in there in the future, as ben seems to be quite enamoured with them right now (he insists on letting them crawl up his arm whenever he finds one)

other additions - a stick with some birds and butterflies (we picked them out together at the local craft store), some moss, a few interesting shaped pinecones, and a small bowl for the berries and wild strawberries growing around the yard. we'll keep our eyes open for an abandonded birds nest like the one we found last year, and perhaps some empty robin's eggs.

i'm curious to find out what'll end up on the table as the season progresses.
